Backlinks (or back-links) are incoming links to a domain or several web pages at a domain. SEO´s count the total number of backlinks as a one of the key indicators of the importance of the link popoularity which a web page receives. Link popularity of course is only one indicator of the importance for search engines. Other indicators are PageRank (Google TM) or the relevance of the anchor text compared to the other text on a web page which links to another web page. Basically, a backlink is every link which a domain receives from another domain. Other wordings for Backlinks are also incoming links or inbound links or inlinks and also inward links.
SEO (search engines optimization) tries to increase the number of inbound links (=back -links) to their own web site. Different factors show the value of a single backlink from another domain. Backlinks from so called "authoritative web sites" (they themselves rank on top for the relevant word or combination of words) are more valuable than links from web sites with completely different content. Another key factor is the "anchor text" of a back-link. This text is the word ( or words) which label a hyperlink and therefore appear on a web page.
